Hill breaks Manziel's school record, leads No. 21 Texas A&M to upset over No. 9 South Carolina

Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The prevailing thought was that Johnny Manziel would never be forgotten at Texas A&M. After just one game, Kenny Hill has already made Johnny Football disappear from a lot of memories.

In his first career start, Hill led the No. 21 Aggies to a 52-28 upset of the ninth-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. Kevin Sumlin had Hill throwing early and often as the sophomore finished the game 44-of-60 for 511 yards and three touchdowns.

The 511 passing yards for Hill were the most in school history as were his 60 pass attempts. It also gives him an edge over Johnny Football because Manziel never topped the 500-yard passing mark during his two seasons with the Aggies.

Hill spread the ball around effectively, connecting on passes with 12 different Aggies receivers. Malcome Kennedy was his favorite target, hauling in 14 catches for 137 yards.

Neither defense had a strong game, as South Carolina's Dylan Thompson also gained some huge chunks of yardage, finishing 20-of-40 for 366 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Nick Jones was the Gamecocks' leading receiver with five receptions for 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The win for Texas A&M put an end to South Carolina's 18-game home winning streak. Not surprisingly, Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier was not too pleased with his team's performance.

Hill's performance also caught the attention of the man he replaced at quarterback, though not till after Manziel had finished his preseason game with the Cleveland Browns.
