Report: Baylor reaches contract settlement with Briles

Baylor has reached a contract settlement with Art Briles, a day after the fired coach accused the school of wrongful termination, according to multiple reports.

A settlement between the two parties was first reported earlier Friday by Jason King of Bleacher Report.

While details of the reported agreement remain unclear, Briles had about $40 million remaining on his contract when the Bears suspended him with intent to terminate. The 60-year-old landed in hot water in May, when an independent investigation by the Pepper Hamilton law firm implicated him and other school administrators in covering up sexual assault allegations against numerous football players.

A peaceful parting of the ways between Briles and his former employer all but ends a lengthy saga that has included twists and turns along the way for both sides.

Reports emerged Monday that suggested several Baylor donors were attempting to rally support for Briles. While a Baylor spokesperson later denied it, multiple outlets reported that the school's board of regents were set to vote on Briles' status, and that many hoped to suspend Briles for a year, rather than fire him.

It seemed Briles and Baylor were destined for a long legal battle after the ex-coach's personal attorney threatened a wrongful termination lawsuit against the school Thursday.

Evidently, however, that won't happen.

Briles compiled a 66-37 record in eight seasons as Baylor's head coach. He turned a perennial cellar-dweller into an annual contender, almost overnight.
