Davis Webb spurns Colorado, transfers to Cal

Colorado's bad dream has turned into a reality.

Months after committing to the Buffaloes as a graduate transfer from Texas Tech, quarterback Davis Webb is spurning Colorado and heading to California instead, he told Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports.

Webb served as a backup last season, but obtained extensive experience as a starter in the two years prior. From 2013 to 2014, he tossed for 5,257 yards and 44 touchdowns as the Red Raiders' top pivot, while committing 22 interceptions.

Injuries cost Webb the starting gig in Lubbock, and he was eventually surpassed on the depth chart by Patrick Mahomes. As a result, the senior graduated from Texas Tech and began looking for a new team to finish his career with in 2016.

Despite committing to Colorado in January, reports popped up over the following months that Webb would be taking visits to Cal and Auburn, both of which faced uncertainty at quarterback. At Cal, Webb should have an excellent chance to fill the role left vacant by the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Jared Goff. Many pundits consider Webb a legitimate NFL prospect in his own right.

Webb could also find comfort quickly in Jake Spavital's offense, as Cal's new offensive coordinator comes from the same coaching tree as Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Meanwhile, Colorado is now staring at a list of underwhelming quarterback options, beginning with incumbent starter Sefo Liufau. The senior-to-be threw for 2,418 yards, nine touchdowns, and six picks in parts of 11 games last season, while missing two-plus contests because of a foot injury.

Webb's reveal comes after repeated attempts by Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre to reassure the Buffs fan base that the pivot would uphold his commitment to the program. As recently as April 26, MacIntyre said he was in constant communication with Webb, who told him he was "definitely coming to Colorado."
