NCAA Game Summary - Arizona State at Washington
Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor Kelly tossed a go-ahead 7-yard touchdown pass to Gary Chambers with three minutes left and No. 14 Arizona State defeated Washington 24-10 on Saturday night.
Kelly, who had missed the last three games with a right foot injury, tossed a 23-yard completion to Jaelen Strong along the left sideline and scampered up the middle for a 12-yard gain two plays later. Demario Richard rumbled for 18 yards to set up a 1st-and-goal from the 10 on the next snap.
The winning pass came on 2nd-and-goal. Just before he was dragged down from behind by Washington's Hau'oli Kikaha, Kelly floated a pass in the end zone for Chambers, who came back to the ball to haul in the catch and put ASU in front.
Armand Perry intercepted Troy Williams on a 4th-and-25 on Washington's ensuing possession and returned it 61 yards for a score to seal the outcome with 52 seconds remaining.
Williams made his first career start after Cyler Miles suffered a concussion against Oregon last week.
Kelly finished 14-of-25 for 180 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Sun Devils (6-1, 4-1 Pac-12), who have won three in a row since losing 62-27 to UCLA at home on Sept. 25.
Kelly made his first appearance since Sept. 13 against Colorado. Mike Bercovici filled in admirably during his absence, leading Arizona State to back-to-back victories over ranked opponents USC and Stanford.
Arizona State remained atop the Pac-12 South division with a showdown upcoming against Utah next Saturday.
Strong had three receptions for 55 yards and a score in the triumph.
Williams was 18-of-26 for 139 yards with two interceptions, while Shaq Thompson carried the ball 21 times for 98 yards for Washington (5-3, 1-3), which dropped its ninth straight game against the Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils led 10-0 at the break and failed on a pair of golden opportunities in the second half to keep the Huskies in it.
Demetrius Cherry recovered a Williams fumble at the Washington 1 midway through the third, but ASU was stuffed on four consecutive tries.
John Timu intercepted a Kelly pass and returned it 63 yards for a score to get Washington on the board late in the third and following a Jordan Simone pick of Williams, Bercovici bobbled a snap on a 27-yard Zane Gonzalez field goal attempt.
The Huskies had tallied just 69 yards of offense prior to their game-tying field goal march midway through the fourth. They ran the ball on 13 of 14 plays on their 80-yard sequence before Cameron Van Winkle split the uprights from 23 yards out to tie the score.
Earlier, Strong's 16-yard TD catch and Gonzalez's 33-yard field goal in the second quarter staked the Sun Devils to their 10-0 halftime cushion.
