NCAA Game Summary - Toledo at Iowa State

Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sam B. Richardson amassed 351 yards and three touchdowns through the air to lift the Iowa State Cyclones to a 37-30 win over the Toledo Rockets in a non-conference battle at Jack Trice Stadium.

Richardson completed 37-of-52 pass attempts and added 31 yards rushing for ISU (2-4), which snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory. D'Vario Montgomery tallied 90 yards on nine receptions, while Allen Lazard made eight grabs for 96 yards and a score. Kamari Cotton-Moya and Jared Brackens both submitted strong performances for the Cyclones' defensive unit, tying for a game-high with 12 total tackles apiece.

Toledo (4-3) had its three-game winning streak come to an end despite a decent showing by Logan Woodside, who amassed 189 yards and a score on 22-of-36 passing efficiency. Terry Swanson also made a difference with 124 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Corey Jones finished with a game-high 118 receiving yards on 12 catches, while Ray Bush led the Rockets' defense with 11 total stops and a sack.

The Rockets received the opening kickoff of the contest and found success on their first drive, moving the ball 81 yards on 13 plays. ISU's defense managed to prevent the visitors from moving inside the 10-yard line, but Toledo went ahead 3-0 after Jeremiah Detmer sent a 27-yard field goal try through the uprights.

The Cyclones tied the score with 6:57 left in the first frame, as Cole Netter converted a 32-yard field goal attempt. Netten then made a 36-yard field goal try just before the end of the first period to give ISU a 6-3 advantage on the scoreboard.

Toledo went back just over four minutes into the second stanza as Swanson scored on a 14-yard run to conclude a 75-yard drive. Detmer made good on a 29- yard field goal attempt to extend the Rockets' lead to 13-6 with 3:20 left before the break. ISU narrowed the deficit just before halftime, as Netter made a 38-yard field goal attempt.

The Cyclones opened up the third quarter with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, which ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Richardson to Tad Ecby. ISU made it a two-possession game at the 8:04 mark of the third frame, as Martinez Syria scored on a one-yard rush. Netter's successful extra-point attempt gave the hosts a 23-13 lead.

The Rockets answered four minutes later, when Swanson rushed one-yard across the goal line for a score to cut ISU's lead down to three points.

Toledo then evened the score at 23 just over a minute into the final period, as Detmer connected on a 41-yard field goal try.

Richardson then guided ISU back in front by engineering an 11-play, 75-yard drive which he ended with a five-yard touchdown toss to E.J. Bibbs. ISU's defense then limited Toledo to only 13 yards on the ensuing drive to return possession to the offense. The Cyclones put it out of reach with a 16-play, 85-yard drive which ended with a 14-yard touchdown throw from Richardson to Lazard with only 3:35 left to play.

The Rockets made it a one-possession game with just under a minute left on the game clock, as Marc Remy scored on a four-yard rush. However, ISU recovered Toledo's on-side kick and took and kneeled twice to end the Rockets' hopes of a comeback.

ISU moved the chains on 12-of-17 third-down plays to hold a 34-25 edge in first downs achieved. With the loss, Toledo is now 1-2 in road games this season.
