NCAA Game Summary - Illinois at Indiana

Bloomington, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Latimer set career highs with 11 catches and 189 yards receiving and hauled in three touchdowns, as the Indiana Hoosiers outlasted the Illinois Fighting Illini, 52-35, in a Big Ten Conference tilt at Memorial Stadium.

For the Hoosiers (4-5, 2-3 Big Ten), Tevin Coleman rushed 15 times for a career-high 215 yards and scored twice. It was most rushing yards by a Hoosier in the last 10 seasons. Nate Sudfeld threw for 267 yards with three touchdowns and an interception on 20-of-27 passing. Stephen Houston added 151 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 17 carries for Indiana, as they snapped a three- game losing streak.

Nathan Scheelhaase completed 38-of-57 passes for 450 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Fighting Illini (3-6, 0-5), who lost for the fifth straight time and extended their school-record conference losing streak to 19 games. Scheelhaase added 45 yards and a score on the ground. Steve Hull finished with 224 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions. Josh Ferguson carried the ball 16 times for 90 yards and a touchdown.

The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard first with a big play, as Coleman scored on a 64-yard touchdown run with 11 minutes left in the first quarter. The Illini answered on the next possession with a nine-play scoring drive capped off when Ferguson ran it in from 21 yards out.

Indiana came right back and scored on a two-yard run by Houston with 2:22 to play in the first. Illinois finished of a high-scoring quarter with a touchdown as Scheelhaase connected with Hull on a 60-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds remaining in the first to knot the score at 14-14.

Sudfeld connected with Latimer on an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Hoosiers back ahead, 21-14, with just over four minutes left in the half, and they went into halftime with that advantage.

On their first possession of the second half, the Illini evened up the score when Scheelhaase hooked up with Hull on another big play, this time a 54-yard touchdown strike to make the score 21-21 with 11:33 to play in the third. The Illini took their first lead of the afternoon just three minutes later when Scheelhaase ran it in from 14 yards out.

The Hoosiers answered with touchdowns on their next two possessions, as Sudfeld found Latimer for a 41-yard touchdown pass with 5:17 to play in the third, and three minutes later they combined again for third time in the game on a 50-yard scoring strike.

In the fourth quarter, the Illini again tied the game, this time with a little luck, as right tackle Corey Lewis recovered a Ferguson fumble in the end zone to knot the score at 35-35 with just under 13 minutes to play in regulation.

The Hoosiers responded quickly, as Coleman dashed for a 75-yard touchdown run just 10 seconds later to put Indiana back on top. After its defense forced Illinois to turn it over on downs, Indiana tacked on another score when Houston ran it in from the 2-yard line to give the Hoosiers a commanding 49-35 lead with 11 minutes left in regulation. Indiana added a 22-yard field goal with 5:25 remaining to make the score 52-35, and the Hoosiers held on to win by that final score.

Both teams finished with over 600 yards of total offense, with the Hoosiers putting up 650 and the Illini right behind with 612. Illinois finished with a distinct advantage on time of possession, holding the ball nearly 10 minutes longer than Indiana, and it ran 21 more plays than the Hoosiers, 92-71.
