Mitchell also led his team on the ground with 105 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Jumichael Ramos had two catches for 45 yards.

NC State scored first with a 6-yard touchdown run by Mitchell. This drive was setup by a Renner interception that gave the Wolfpack possession at the Tar Heels' 24-yard line.

The home team would score again, this time a 20-yard field goal by Niklas Sade to put the Wolfpack up 10-0.

UNC answered back with a 2-yard touchdown toss from Williams to Davis. The Tar Heels would continue their scoring push with a one-yard touchdown rush by Renner to go ahead, 14-10, with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

NC State regained the lead early in the second stanza as Sade connected on a pair of field goal attempts, from distances of 38 and 43 yards away.

A 59-yard pass from receiver Ryan Switzer to Davis would put the Tar Heels back in front, 21-16 with 9:43 left in the first half. Neither side managed to produce any more points before the intermission.

NC State narrowed the deficit to just two points at the 4:50 mark of the third period as Sade chipped in a 28-yard field goal try.

With 11:19 remaining T.J. Logan was able to score on a 14-yard rush. The Tar Heels added some insurance with just over 11 minutes left in regulation as T.J. Logan rushed 14 yards for a touchdown. The Tar Heels missed the ensuing extra-point attempt, which kept the Wolfpack down by just one possession.

NC State could not rally back to even the score as it turned the ball over on downs with only 2:42 left to play.

Renner's passing effort was good enough to move him to the 20th spot on the ACC career passing list.

This loss extended the Wolfpack's losing streak to four games.
