Frink powers LIU Brooklyn past Div. III John Jay, 78-40

NEW YORK (AP) Jerome Frink scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as LIU Brooklyn posted a convincing, 78-40 victory over Division III John Jay College in the season opener for both schools Friday night.

Frink's free throw almost six minutes into the contest capped a 15-2 opening run for the Blackbirds, who went on to hold a 41-17 advantage at intermission.

LIU Brooklyn shot 43.3 percent from the field, knocking down 29 of 67 shots, including 6 of 22 shots from beyond the arc. The Blackbirds held the Bloodhounds to 13 of 58 shooting from the field (22.4 percent) and held a substantial edge on the boards, 55-35.

Joel Hernandez also contributed 17 points for LIU Brooklyn and 12 of the 13 players who saw action figured in the scoring.

Essien Epps was the leading scorer for John Jay with seven points.
