Rider beats Hampton 67-56 in season opener

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Xavier Lundy and Stevie Jordan each scored 14 points and Rider beat Hampton 67-56 on Friday night in a season opener for both teams.

Hampton got within 50-48 midway through the second half, but Rider answered with a 15-4 run to take a 65-52 lead with 3:51 left.

Norville Carey added 13 points, Kahlil Thomas had 11 and Jimmie Taylor, who was the only starter not in double figures, scored nine points for Rider. Thomas grabbed nine rebounds and Jordan had five assists.

Taylor hit a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer for a 36-24 lead.

Sophomore Kalin Fisher tied a career-high with 14 points to lead Hampton. Jermaine Marrow added 13 points in his debut and Charles Wilson-Fisher grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. The Pirates were held to just 9-of-33 shooting (27.3 percent) in the first half and finished at 35.1 percent.
