UMBC drills 17 3-pointers in opening 92-61 win over Hood

BALTIMORE (AP) Jairus Lyles scored 18 points and UMBC tied a school record with 17 3-pointers in an easy 92-61 season-opening win over Division III Hood College on Friday.

Will Darley and Ben Grace each hit four treys as the Retrievers were 17 of 43 behind the arc in the first game for new coach Ryan Odom. Darley finished with 14 points, and Grace and Joe Sherburne had 12 each.

UMBC shot 56 percent in the first half (19 of 34) with 10 3-pointers, opening a 48-17 lead. Four of its 3s came in an 18-0 run that made it 26-7.

The Retrievers had a 44-17 advantage on the boards with Nolan Gerrity, the only starter who didn't score in double figures, grabbing 11.

Scott Bolen led the Blazers, who shot 29 percent in the first half and 54 percent in the second, with 13 points.
