Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki will not play in Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

Nowitzki is dealing with a swollen right knee.

The 17-year veteran has already rested in several games this season, as he enters the twilight of his career.

Head coach Rick Carlisle did not know the severity of the injury.

"He's out tonight. That's all I can tell you. We'll see where we are tomorrow and the next day," Carlisle said.

Despite his age (37) Nowitzki has continued to be effective for the Mavericks this season. The 7-foot German is averaging 17.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and is shooting 39.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Backup Charlie Villanueva is a strong candidate to replace Nowitzki in the starting lineup this evening. The UConn product is averaging 5.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 2015-16.
