Curry: Warriors have discussed going for record 33-game winning streak

The Golden State Warriors recently set an NBA record by winning their 16th straight game to open a season by knocking off the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

With one record in the books, the defending NBA champions are now setting their sights on a benchmark that only one team has even come close to touching: 33 victories in a row by the 1971-72 Lakers.

"We talk about 33," reigning MVP Stephen Curry said during a recent conference call, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Diamond Leung. "I think I've probably talked about it more than anybody else on the team, just because I know about the history and just really how hard it is.

"We've had like two 16-game winning streaks the last two years, and those are pretty special feats. For us to have to double that output, I mean we're going to play hard and hopefully close in on that record, but it won't be a disappointing effort if we don't get there. Because there are so many talented teams in this league and for us to just be playing at a high level right now, that's what we're worried about. And if we close in and get to 29, 30 games, we'll talk about it a little bit more."

The 2012-13 Miami Heat compiled a 27-game winning streak, but that was still six games shy of replicating what the Lakers had done 42 years earlier. Only four other teams in league history have even reached 20.

Curry, who currently leads the NBA in scoring with 32.1 points per game, understands the significance of what the Lakers accomplished, and how difficult it will be to match, and hopefully surpass.

"Thirty-three is a special number," Curry said. "So there's obviously still milestones that we can continue to go after, but you go after them by how you approach each day."
