Report: At least 1 team has discussed signing Larry Sanders

Potential will never fail to intrigue.

Perhaps with that in mind, at least one Western Conference team has had internal discussions about the possibility of signing Larry Sanders, according to a report from Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times.

What's more, Sanders posted a Snapchat on Monday that he had arrived in Dallas. The Dallas Mavericks have multiple frontcourt players in camp competing for jobs and could conceivably take a flier on Sanders in an attempt to add upside.

Were a team to push their interest beyond the idea phase, the next question would be whether Sanders is ready and willing to make a return to the NBA. The 26-year-old agreed to a buyout with the Milwaukee Bucks in February amid an indefinite suspension for non-compliance with the league's anti-drug policy. Sanders has openly admitted to marijuana use, a habit he was working to kick in order to continue his NBA career, according to reports at the time on his situation.

The near-7-footer has said he'd return to basketball if he gets to a point mentally where he's comfortable doing so. He participated in the pro-am Drew League this summer, which may mean he's nearing that point, or may mean nothing at all.

If Sanders indeed decides to make a return - and gets in compliance with the league's anti-drug program - interest from teams would be borne of the same reasons that led the Bucks to give Sanders a four-year, $44-million extension in 2013. He has a strong reputation as a rim protector, averaging 2.3 blocks in 25.7 minutes over his last three seasons, and the Bucks were significantly better on defense when Sanders was on the floor in his breakout 2012-13 campaign.

In 233 career games, Sanders has averaged 6.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks, on 48 percent shooting.
