Spurs quietly add Rasual Butler to camp roster

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs opened training camp with a surprise name on the roster.

Rasual Butler is a previously unannounced addition to camp, bringing the roster to the full 20 players allowable. While the unheralded nature of the signing may suggest he isn't likely to crack the team, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports the 36-year-old "has a chance" based on his shooting and leadership.

Out of the league in 2012-13 after a failed stint with the Toronto Raptors, Butler caught on with the Indiana Pacers for 2013-14 and wound up appearing in 50 games. He built on that resurgence by signing with the Washington Wizards last season, playing a fairly major role in 75 games, though he made no impact come playoff time.

In 20.1 minutes last year, Butler averaged 7.7 points and 2.6 rebounds, knocking down 38.7 percent of his 3-point looks.

Butler's name didn't come up much during the course of the offseason, but he can use the preseason to audition for other teams. San Antonio's roster is presumed full with 13 guaranteed contracts and significant partial guarantees for two others.
