Suns waive Kendall Marshall, sign Earl Barron to 10-day deal

Shortly after acquiring him as part of a three-team trade on deadline day, the Phoenix Suns have waived point guard Kendall Marshall, the team announced Saturday.

The move shouldn't come as a surprise, given that Marshall is out for the year with a torn ACL and will be an unrestricted free agent when the season is up.

The Suns drafted Marshall 13th overall in 2012, but traded him to the Washington Wizards (who immediately waived him) after his rookie season. Marshall was having a bit of a resurgence as a reserve with the Milwaukee Bucks, before suffering the season-ending injury. He averaged 10.2 points and 7.4 assists per 36 minutes, shooting a career-best 45.5 percent from the field and an impressive 39.1 percent from beyond the arc.

The Suns have filled his roster spot, and their void at backup center, by signing Earl Barron to a 10-day deal. The Suns decided to roll with sophomore Alex Len as their starter, and shipped Miles Plumlee out to Milwaukee in the same deal that brought in Marshall (and, more importantly, Brandon Knight).

That left them without a traditional big playing behind Len, and the 7-foot Barron - who had a camp deal with the Suns in the offseason - appears to be their short-term solution. He hasn't played in the NBA in two years, and has shot just 37.5 percent from the field in 124 career games between seven teams. But he's typically rebounded well, and he's having a killer season in the D-League.

In 26 games with the Bakersfield Jam, he's averaged 20.5 points and 10.9 rebounds in 32.5 minutes. Barron played 12 games for the Suns during the 2010-11 season.
