Report: Wizards to sign John Lucas for more backcourt depth

Russ Isabella / USA Today Sports

The Washington Wizards are bleeding, and they're calling on John Lucas III to be their band-aid.

With Bradley Beal on the shelf until December, Martell Webster slowly working his way back from offseason back surgery, Glen Rice dealing with a sprained ankle and Ray Allen not walking through the door, the Wizards desperately need help at shooting guard.

Their current rotation at the two includes low-upside veteran small forward Rasual Butler, the unproven Xavier Silas, and the pedestrian Garrett Temple. It appears the Wizards will now add to their depth at the position, but in the least flashy way possible.

Washington is set to sign Lucas, a veteran free agent guard, as a result, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.

This is a band-aid, to be sure, and one without much upside. The Wizards only have 14 guaranteed contracts, so any warm body capable of spotting in at the two will do. The 31-year-old Lucas can score and shoot in small bursts, having averaged 5.6 points in 13.9 minutes over the past three seasons with Chicago, Toronto and Utah.

He's also hit 36.5 percent of his threes in that time, and given John Wall's propensity for creating open corner threes for teammates, that's largely what Lucas's role should consist of.
