The Dallas Mavericks are looking to open up roster spots by dumping one or two deep bench pieces in point guard Gal Mekel and center Bernard James, according to a report from Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.

Mekel signed with the Mavericks as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He averaged 2.4 points and two assists in his rookie year and is owed $947,000 for this upcoming season.

James was drafted 33rd overall in 2012 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and was sent to the Mavs in a deal involving forwards Jae Crowder and Tyler Zeller. In two seasons with Dallas, James boasts per-game averages of 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds.

The Mavericks' roster currently numbers 20, which they will need to trim to 15 or lower before the regular season starts.
