Pacers head coach Frank Vogel on signing an extension: 'I want to be here forever'

The Indiana Pacers have sustained enough losses this summer. Shooting guard Lance Stephenson signed with the Charlotte Hornets in free agency and Paul George broke his leg during USA Basketball training camp.

All that remains of their core is Roy Hibbert, David West and head coach Frank Vogel. For their part, the Pacers are working on an extension with Vogel, who has one season remaining on his deal, according to a report from USA Today.

Despite the talks, the two sides have not yet settled on a deal. Vogel shrugged off reporters by saying "we'll see how it goes," but added that, he "wants to be (in Indiana) forever."

Vogel has helped oversee the Pacers' recent return to prominence. The franchise struggled to recover after the Malice at the Palace scandal until a change at head coach put Vogel in charge. Under his watch, the Pacers steadily improved from a .500 team to the top seed in the Eastern Conference last season.

The snag in negotiations, however, could be rooted in the rising prices for head coaches. Two wholly inexperienced head coaches in Steve Kerr (Warriors) and Derek Fisher (Knicks) inked exorbitant deals this offseason, so Vogel is probably also looking to cash in, which could be a problem for a mid-market team like Indiana.
