USA Basketball could trim roster immediately following Wednesday's exhibition

Wednesday night's exhibition bout against the Dominican Republic could play a pivotal role in shaping Team USA's roster for the start of the FIBA World Cup on Aug. 30.

While the U.S. has two more exhibitions remaining - Friday against Puerto Rico and Tuesday against Slovenia in Spain - program director Jerry Colangelo has suggested that cuts will likely come this week. That timeline may be pushed up to Wednesday night or Thursday morning, with Team USA leaning toward making cuts now so the official squad can get "one good practice together" ahead of Friday's friendly.

The latest date cuts could be made appears to be Friday night with the team heading overseas Saturday. It's possible that only a few cuts will be made Wednesday night, especially in light of Derrick Rose's knee soreness.

Here's how the roster currently stands, keeping in mind that USA Basketball has identified several point guards as two-guards for the purposes of this tournament.

Guards: Rose, Kyrie Irving
Wings: Steph Curry, James Harden, Klay Thompson, Rudy Gay, Chandler Parsons, Gordon Hayward, Kyle Korver, Damian Lillard, DeMar DeRozan
Bigs: Anthony Davis, Kenneth Faried, DeMarcus Cousins, Mason Plumlee, Andre Drummond

Of that group, it's been suggested that only one of Cousins, Plumlee and Drummond will make the squad, while DeRozan and Lillard are said to be on the bubble depending on how the other wing selections shake out. Drummond, DeRozan, Hayward and Cousins sat out last week's exhibition opener, though Cousins' absence was due to injury.
