Report: Derrick Rose experiencing knee soreness

Matt Marton / USA TODAY Sports

This is not what Chicago Bulls fans want to hear.

According to a report from ESPN, a source familiar with Rose's condition cites that the explosive point guard has been hampered with knee soreness since Team USA's Aug. 16 matchup against Brazil.

Rose, who is training with Team USA, was given two straight days off to rest, though head coach Mike Krzyzewski noted in a radio interview that the rest was scheduled beforehand because Rose had been "going so hard."

USA basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo also chimed in, citing that Rose thought he needed a bit of time off.

Rose is expected to play on Wednesday against the Dominican Republic, but should he be out, Kyrie Irving will likely be his replacement.

The worry with Rose will always be with his knees, which he's injured twice over the last two years and limited him to 49 games across the last three seasons. Then again, the extended time off could also explain the soreness considering he has not appeared in a game since 2013.

However, if Rose cannot sustain a heavy workload – the Americans will play five games in six days during the tournament – perhaps Colangelo and his think-tank will consider adding a fourth point guard to soak up minutes.
