Kings' Gay on extension: 'I really want to see where the organization is going'

The Sacramento Kings convinced Rudy Gay to exercise his $19.3 million player option ahead of this season, but keeping him in the River City longer might take some more persuasion.

“I don’t want to create a big fuss like it was before, but I’m taking my time,” Gay told Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee. “I’m open to doing things, but I really want to see where the organization is going.”

Gay arrived in Sacramento after underachieving with the Toronto Raptors, but saw a resurgence in California, averaging 20.1 points on 48 percent shooting to go with 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 55 games.

With Isaiah Thomas now a Phoenix Sun, the Kings could be taking a step back next season but the addition of Darren Collison could soften the blow.

Gay, who turns 28 in August, would not rule out extension talks during the season but reiterated that those talks are dependent on the team's direction.

“I’m open to doing (an extension) as soon as the season starts,” Gay said. “I’m open to doing it whenever, but right now, I just really want to focus on getting better as a player and seeing the vision of the team going forward.”
