Deron Williams to undergo surgery on both ankles on Tuesday

You've heard the term "getting his ankles broken" before, describing when a player is embarrassed on defense by an offensive player's handles. Well, it seems Deron Williams has been playing one-on-one with Hot Sauce a little too often.

As such, Williams will undergo surgery on not one but both of his ankles on Tuesday, according to a release from the Brooklyn Nets.

From the release:

Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams is scheduled to undergo surgery on both ankles on Tuesday, May 27, General Manager Billy King announced today. The surgery will be performed by Nets’ foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Martin O’Malley.

“Deron will undergo surgery on both ankles next Tuesday,” said Dr. O’Malley. “He will have a bone chip removed from his right ankle, and the left ankle will have an arthroscopic cleanout with removal of spurs from both the front and back of the ankle. Deron is expected to make a full recovery.”

Jest aside, Williams has struggled with ankle issues for years now, with lingering issues costing him 18 games during the 2013-14 season. While Williams played 78 of a possible 82 games in 2012-13, he hasn't played a full slate of games since 2007-08, missing an average of 11.7 games per season in that span.

As far back as 2006, Williams has dealt with ankle sprains, with the issue worsening until its apex last season, after which Williams spent most of the offseason in a walking boot. (The Brooklyn Game has a full breakdown of his injuries since joining the Nets in 2011.)

The hope is obviously that the surgeries and an offseason of rest will allow the 29-year-old Williams to return to All-Star form for 2014-15; as his ankle health has deteriorated, so has his performance, bottoming out with averages of 14.3 points and 6.1 assists this season.
