Wolves release Stephenson after 2nd 10-day expires

Brad Rempel / USA TODAY Sports

Lance Stephenson's time appears to be up in Minnesota.

The Timberwolves, Stephenson's fifth team in the past three seasons, are letting the mercurial shooting guard go now that his second 10-day contract is up, sources told ESPN's Chris Haynes.

With the two mini-deals having run their course, the Wolves would've had to sign Stephenson through the end of the season in order to retain him.

An ankle sprain helped make their decision for them. Stephenson has hardly played during his second 10-day cycle, appearing in just two games for 18 total minutes. Over his two deals, the 26-year-old averaged 3.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in six games.

Stephenson began the season with the New Orleans Pelicans, but they waived him shortly after opening night when he tore his groin.
