Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Ahead of schedule in recovery

Smith (thumb) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a fractured right thumb and could return sometime in mid-March, Chris Haynes and Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com report.

Analysis:

It was initially believed that Smith wouldn't return until late March or early April, but he's progressed more quickly than expected and could be back at practice in as soon as three weeks, barring a setback. A mid-March return would provide Smith with roughly 15 games to regain his form before the Cavs embark on what will likely be another deep playoff run. Smith figures to slot back into the starting five at shooting guard, but his role could be slightly reduced given the presence of Kyle Korver, who was acquired a few weeks after Smith required surgery to repair his fractured right thumb.
