Report: Lakers' Jim Buss wasn't told of Magic hiring

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

It's looking more and more likely that Jim Buss' time with the Los Angeles Lakers could soon be coming to a close.

Despite being a part-owner of the franchise, Buss - who is also in charge of the Lakers' basketball operations - wasn't made aware of the decision to hire Magic Johnson as an advisor until shortly before the public announcement, Bleacher Reports' Kevin Ding reports.

Buss stated two years ago he would step down if the Lakers weren't competitive by 2017, and it doesn't appear likely the team will be able to turn things around by April. The coming months will determine Buss' future with the franchise, according to Ding.

Should Buss stay with the team, it would be an odd fit, as Johnson has criticized him multiple times over the years for getting too involved in basketball decisions.

Johnson attempted to quiet the rumors Thursday, saying he would be supportive of Buss despite their differences.

"Jim is calling the shots," Johnson told the Orange County Register's Mark Medina. "I want him to understand I'm just here to lend advice. I'm not here to be anything but just give you some basketball knowledge."

For now, Johnson will serve as an advisor, assisting part-owner and president Jeanie Buss in "all areas of basketball and business."
