His positioning was perfect, the basketball fell into his hands, and the opportunity to send the game into overtime was right in the crosshairs.

None of that ultimately mattered, though. LaMarcus Aldridge's putback attempt during the dying seconds of Wednesday's game against the Houston Rockets didn't hit the mark and the San Antonio Spurs lost their third home game of the season, a heartbreaking 101-99 defeat in a battle of Lone Star rivals.

With 5.8 seconds remaining on the game clock, Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard secured the inbound pass and drove to the bucket with a high arcing shot off the glass, which bounced off the rim and into Aldridge's grasp.

It appeared as though Aldridge was nudged in the back during the possession, which may have contributed to what looked like an easy bucket not falling through.

With the loss, San Antonio falls to 5-3 on the season and 1-3 at the AT&T Center - a startling mark considering the team lost only one game on its home floor during the 2015-16 campaign.

Aldridge had 14 points and five rebounds in 30 minutes of action, while Leonard led all scorers with 34 points on 11-of-26 shooting.
