Brooks: Wizards don't have chemistry problem

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Scott Brooks is choosing to look away.

Brooks, the newly-hired head coach of the Washington Wizards, told Candace Buckner of the Washington Post that no issues exist between John Wall and Bradley Beal.

"There’s a lot of things I’m worried about going into camp, and every coach in this league is worried about. That is not one of them," Brooks in regard to his backcourt.

"I haven’t even talked to our assistant coaches about it. Will I meet with each player individually? Yes. Will I meet with the team? Yes. Will I meet with the positions together? Yes. But I don’t see our team having a problem with chemistry."

Wall admitted that he and Beal "have a tendency to dislike each other on the court," among other issues, in a recent interview with CSN Washington. He also insinuated that Beal needs to improve his game, now that he's signed a five-year maximum contract.

After Wall took his beef public, reports emerged speaking to the severity of Washington's dysfunction. An agent told The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor that Beal and Wall's relationship is "probably a total disaster."

However, despite the warning signs, Brooks sees nothing more than two competitors butting heads.

“I don’t look at it as an issue, I look at it as two competitive players developing their position in this league,” Brooks continued. “I’ve had history of two competitive players, at a young age, (developing) together. That’s not always going to be lovey-dovey, but the respect has to be there."

Having managed a quartet of emerging stars during his previous stint in Oklahoma City, Brooks said it's on him to keep the locker room happy.

“You have to have a competitive group to win. Some nights it’s going to get very competitive, and sometimes it’s going to boil over. That’s my job, to make sure it never goes across that line,” Brooks said.
