Bird unsure about Vogel's future: 'I don't know what's going to happen'

It sounds as though Frank Vogel's time in Indiana could be coming to an end.

A day after it was reported Vogel and the Pacers had yet to discuss a contract extension following Indiana's Game 7 loss in Toronto, team president Larry Bird didn't exactly give Vogel a ringing endorsement.

"I don't know what's going to happen," Bird told the Indy Star's Gregg Doyel. "What I don't want to do is leave Frank hanging," Bird said after mentioning owner Herb Simon is currently unavailable to discuss Vogel's job status. "There's other jobs out there he could get."

Bird's doubt in Vogel's future seems odd given that the Pacers overachieved this season, winning 45 games before pushing the second-seeded Raptors to seven games.

In five-plus seasons at the helm, Vogel led the Pacers to a 250-81 record, five playoff appearances, a pair of visits to the Eastern Conference finals, and five postseason-series victories overall. Indiana has also ranked in the top 10 in defensive efficiency in each of the last five seasons, which included three top-three finishes on the defensive end.

If there's one area where Vogel's teams have struggled, however, it's on the offensive end of the floor, and that's where Bird has obvious concerns.

"We need to score more points," Bird told Doyel. "If Frank comes back, what can we do to get better offense? It's on all of us."

"Frank's a great guy. He's going to be fine no matter what happens," Bird added. "If he's back, he'll be fine here. If he's not, he's not. We'll see."

Should Vogel and the Pacers part ways, there are still head coaching vacancies in New York, Houston, and Sacramento.
