Kevin Ollie reassures recruit he's staying at UConn

High school recruit Christian Vital verbally committed to UConn on Friday, but not before receiving assurance from Kevin Ollie that he would coach the team next season.

"Basically (Ollie has) texted me before 9 (a.m.) every day this week. Just letting me know about the Lakers' situation and that he loves me and he's staying at UConn," Vital said, according to Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant.

Ollie was rumored to be of great interest to the Los Angeles Lakers in their search for a new head coach, though such speculation is now moot with the Lakers announcing the hiring of Luke Walton.

Still, the 43-year-old's name has come up for other NBA jobs in recent years, leading to questions about if and when he would make the jump to the pros.

Ollie has a 97-44 career record as the coach of his alma mater, and led the Huskies to a national championship in 2013-14.
