Meram lifts Crew over NYCFC, 2-1

NEW YORK (AP) Justin Meram scored in the 83rd minute and the Columbus Crew beat New York City FC 2-1 on Saturday to move into second place in the Eastern Conference.

The Crew (11-8-8) capitalized on a takeaway near midfield, leading to an opening for Meram up the left side. His shot rolled through a couple of defenders and bounced home off the inside of the far post.

Federico Higuain opened the scoring with a hard-bouncing header off Wil Trapp's corner in the 10th minute.

Andrew Jacobson tied it for NYCFC (7-13-7) in the 20th minute with a blast from far outside the box.

The teams met for the second time in 10 days after a 2-2 draw in Columbus on Aug. 19.
