Choo to miss 4-6 weeks with calf strain

Texas Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo will be sidelined for four-to-six weeks after tests revealed a Grade 2 calf strain in his right leg, the club announced Sunday.

Choo suffered the injury during a pregame workout Saturday while running on the wet outfield grass in batting practice. He was scratched from Saturday's 4-1 win over the Angels, and sent for an MRI to determine the severity of the strain.

The news comes less than 24 hours after the Rangers lost starting catcher Robinson Chirinos for 10-to-12 weeks due to a fractured right forearm.

"Obviously a blow to us, but this is the kind of thing that galvanizes this group. They pull together and play with a little more fever and passion," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Saturday night.

Choo started slow last April before enjoying his finest stretch in Texas since signing a seven-year, $130-million deal in 2014. The 33-year-old slashed .276/.375/.463 with a career-tying 22 homers in 149 games for last season's division-winning Rangers.

In a corresponding roster move Sunday, the Rangers recalled highly touted prospect Nomar Mazara from Triple-A Round Rock. Mazara, a 20-year-old outfielder who's considered among the top prospects in baseball, slashed .296/.366/.443 with 14 homers for Round Rock and Double-A Frisco last season.
