Tigers finalize minors deal with Schierholtz, 5 others

Joe Camporeale / USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers added depth to the organization Wednesday, signing six players to minor-league contracts.

Outfielder Nate Schierholtz, infielders Jordany Valdespin and Alberto Gonzalez, and hurlers Logan Kensing, Melvin Mercedes, and Dustin Molleken all received deals with the club.

Schierholtz and Kensing have received invitations to spring training.

Schierholtz hit .253/.302/.405 over eight major-league seasons before signing with the Hiroshima Carp of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League last year. The 31-year-old, who won a World Series title with the San Francisco Giants in 2010, will now attempt to crack the Tigers' 25-man roster.
