Collins: Harvey must deal with teammates after missing workout

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Harvey is in the news yet again and this time, he's going to have to explain to his teammates why he's creating a distraction prior to the National League Division Series.

The New York Mets pitcher missed a mandatory team workout on Tuesday after getting stuck in traffic.

When asked if Harvey's absence was selfish and unprofessional, manager Terry Collins told Newsday's Marc Carig how he felt.

That's your perception. That's not everybody's. That could just be your perception. Another perception from somebody else could be that he's a dumbass, you know? The perception of somebody else might be you know what, he was out partying. There's all sorts of things that guys are talking about. That's your opinion. You're allowed to write whatever you want. My perception is he fucked up. I'll take care of it. He's going to have to deal with his teammates, which is a bigger issue than dealing with anybody else. We'll take care of it.

Harvey, who is scheduled to start Game 3 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be fined for his mistake.

"Obviously today was not the greatest," Harvey told reporters. "The last thing I ever want to do is not be with my team. There's no excuse. I screwed up."

Harvey posted a 2.71 ERA in 29 regular season starts for the Mets.
