Harvey misses mandatory workout due to traffic
As the New York Mets went through drills Tuesday in preparation for Friday's NLDS opener in Los Angeles, one player was noticeably absent from the mandatory workout: Matt Harvey.
According to Mets manager Terry Collins, Harvey - tentatively scheduled to start Game 3 of the division series - said he got caught in tunnel traffic en route to Citi Field, at which point he called Collins, who told him to turn around and head home. He didn't.
Instead, the 26-year-old right-hander kept heading to the ballpark, resolved to take responsibility for his unexcused absence.
"Obviously today was not the greatest," Harvey told reporters. "The last thing I ever want to do is not be with my team. There's no excuse. I screwed up."
Harvey, who lives about 13 miles west of Queens in Manhattan's East Village, made 29 starts for the Mets this season, crafting a 2.71 ERA while enduring endless conversations about his workload in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. Collins noted Harvey, an All-Star in 2013, will be disciplined.
"We handle these things in house," he said.
