Mets' Cespedes hopes to become pro golfer after MLB career
Apparently dominating the baseball diamond isn't enough for Yoenis Cespedes.
The New York Mets outfielder, who has played his way into the NL MVP discussion just six weeks after being traded from the Detroit Tigers, told reporters he hopes to hit the links professionally after his baseball carer.
"I’ve been thinking about it - if there is an opportunity to play professionally later, maybe not PGA, but I would like to play golf professionally," Cespedes told Christian Red of the New York Daily News on Thursday, adding that his favorite teammate to play with is southpaw Jon Niese.
Though he hasn't played for very long, the 29-year-old told reporters how he has been lauded by long-time golfers on the course.
"I've been playing golf for only a year and a half," Cespedes said. "Some people who have been playing golf for years and they learn that I've only played a year and a half, they can't believe it and they say 'Incredible!'"
It should come as no surprise to Mets fans that the slugger is lethal with a driver. Cespedes told Marc Carig of Newsday Sports that he hit a 410-yard drive in Colorado and made an eagle.
When he's not at the golf course, Cespedes has been treating NL ballparks like his own personal driving range, mashing 17 home runs in just 43 games since joining the Mets.
