Cubs' Haren on retiring: 'I don't want to say this is it and pull a Brett Favre'

Dan Haren's major-league career may be coming to its conclusion at season's end, but the right-hander's going to be sure he's truly done before making a retirement announcement.

"I would say the chances are this will probably be it," Haren told Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. "I don't want to pull a Brett Favre."

Haren is of course speaking about the controversy surrounding the Green Bay Packers great, who announced his retirement from football in an emotional press conference in March 2008, just to turn around and ask for his reinstatement into the NFL several months later.

The 34-year-old Haren, who was shipped to the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline, has been considering retirement throughout the season, but a scenery switch could prompt him to change his mind after a rocky time with the Marlins.

"It was a rough situation. It definitely wasn't what we all had planned," Haren told MLB.com's Joe Frisaro about the situation in Miami. "I feel bad for a lot of the players there, especially the old guys.

"I'm definitely happy to be here."

Haren is scheduled to make his Cubs debut Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
