Orioles designate Delmon Young for assignment, will attempt to trade him

The Baltimore Orioles designated Delmon Young for assignment ahead of Wednesday's game against the Texas Rangers, removing the increasingly superfluous veteran from their 40-man roster to create a spot for reliever Tyler Wilson.

Young received a one-year, $2.25-million deal from Baltimore this winter after managing a 119 OPS+ over 83 games with the Orioles in 2014, but saw his playing time diminish of late amid breakouts from Jimmy Paredes and Chris Parmelee. In 52 games this season, the 29-year-old hit .270/.289/.339 (76 OPS+) with two home runs and a 16.1 percent strikeout rate.

Orioles president of baseball operations Dan Duquette has already approached executives in both leagues, however, about working out a trade for Young, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko.

"We've got a lot of good players," manager Buck Showalter told reporters. "I take solace, not satisfaction, but feel good that someone's going to end up in the big leagues that's in the big leagues with us. That's why the system's there to protect those guys, and it should be, to keep certain teams from hoarding players."
