Rangers' Moreland could be facing elbow surgery

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers can't catch a break.

Mitch Moreland is the latest Ranger to succumb to injury and may need a disabled list stint to get right.

Moreland could be required to undergo microscopic surgery on his left elbow that may sideline him for two weeks, according to Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram. The club is expected to know more about the 29-year-old's status in the coming days.

The first baseman/designated hitter felt discomfort earlier in the week when swinging a weighted bat and an MRI revealed a loose body, showing a piece of bone or cartilage in his joint, which is causing it to lock up. Surgery would prevent him from participating in baseball activities for 7-10 days.

"If the swelling goes down, it might be settled and I won't feel it," Moreland said. "I don't want it. It's a freak thing. I've swung a heavy bat a million times. Everybody does it. It's just one of those things."

Moreland, limited to 52 games in 2014 after undergoing ankle surgery, is hitting .259/.382/.444 with one homer and five RBIs through nine games.

Texas, already without Jurickson Profar for the season, in addition to a number of key pitchers - including ace Yu Darvish - recently lost Derek Holland for a few months due to a shoulder strain.
