Orioles GM: 'Singluar focus' on improving the team; in search of utility infielder, reliever

Baltimore Orioles general manager Dan Duquette has two remaining items on his offseason wish list.

Speaking at Orioles FanFest on Saturday, Duquette said that the team is still looking to add a reliever and a utility infielder, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun, and that he expects to get both done.

The Orioles have endured a quiet offseason, with it appearing like more players have left than signed. The loudest rumblings, of course, coming from Duquette himself, as the executive had been linked to a potential move to the Toronto Blue Jays - though those talks have been put on hold and Duquette added that his attention is solely on the Orioles.

"It's important for the Orioles fans to know that my focus - and my singular focus - is on improving the team," Duquette said. "We do that day by day, trade by trade, addition by addition and we did that this year in the offseason like we've done it in the past."

With outfielders Nelson Cruz and Nick Markakis signing elsewhere, Duquette re-upped with Delmon Young and acquired Travis Snider from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Other than a handful of minor-league deals and the one-year, $1.7-million signing of reliever Wesley Wright, that's been all for Duquette.

A number of potential relievers have come off the board this week, as Alexi Ogando, Neal Cotts and Casey Janssen have all signed deals, though Francisco Rodriguez, Rafael Soriano, Joba Chamberlain, Phil Coke and Dustin McGowan all remain as viable options.

The free-agent market for infielders is a little more sparse, with Everth Cabrera and Rickie Weeks representing the top remaining position players - however, neither player would be described as versatile. Weeks has spent his entire defensive career at second base, while Cabrera has logged only 13 of his 481 games at a position other than shortstop.
