Tigers' Kinsler on approach: 'I'm not going up there to walk'

Rick Osentoski / USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler isn't one for taking a free pass.

The nine-year veteran drew a career-low 29 walks and posted a .307 on-base percentage in a career-high 726 plate appearances last season.

While that production is a far cry from the 89 walks and .382 OBP Kinsler posted back in 2011, he doesn't appear willing to alter his approach in order to return to his previous form.

"If I see a good pitch to hit, I'm not just going to let it go by because I want to walk," Kinsler told Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press. "My goal is to do the most damage possible every time at the plate.

"I'm not going up there to walk. If you're going up to walk, you're a different type of player, I guess. That's not the normal mind-set for an offensive player."

Depending on how much success the Tigers' expected center-field platoon of Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose has, Kinsler could find himself once again hitting either first or second in the order.
