Giants GM: We haven't talked to Scherzer and we don't plan to

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants' efforts to sign left-hander Jon Lester earlier this offseason proved futile, and the reigning World Series champions don't plan to pursue the next-best available starter on the free-agent market.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean indicated Saturday that he has not engaged in contract discussions with Max Scherzer, a Cy Young award winner in 2013, nor does he intend to at any point, per Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group.

Though the Giants were reportedly willing to offer Lester a seven-year deal worth close to $168 million, the three-time All-Star ultimately opted for a six-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. The Giants, however, augmented their rotation shortly thereafter, re-signing veteran right-hander Jake Peavy to a two-year deal.

Scherzer, a two-time All-Star, enjoyed another strong season with the Detroit Tigers in 2014, crafting a career-high 3.15 ERA (127 ERA+) with a 1.18 WHIP over 220 1/3 innings.
