Pirates officially sign Francisco Liriano to 3-year deal

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates officially announced Friday that they have signed left-hander Francisco Liriano to a three-year deal.

While financial terms were not disclosed, the deal is valued at $39 million, according to multiple reports.

Liriano spent the last two seasons with Pittsburgh and was one of general manger Neal Huntington's main priorities this offseason after the nine-year veteran turned down the Pirates' $15.3 million qualifying offer.

Previously signed as a free agent in 2013, Liriano posted a 12-18 record and 3.20 ERA in 55 starts for the Pirates. His 175 strikeouts in 162 1/3 innings last season represented the second-highest mark in his career.

Prior to joining the Pirates, Liriano battled inconsistencies and durability issues, posting a 4.40 ERA and 1.35 WHIP while averaging 136 innings over six seasons. In his two years with Pittsburgh, he's averaged 162 innings.

Liriano is likely to slide in near the top of the rotation, with fellow offseason signee A.J. Burnett and 24-year-old right-hander Gerrit Cole.
