Max Scherzer has likely thrown his last pitch for the Detroit Tigers.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski revealed at the winter meetings Thursday the club is no longer pursuing the hard-throwing right-hander, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.

Scherzer, 30, remains the undisputed top arm on the free-agent market and is reportedly seeking a monster long-term deal in the neighborhood of $200 million. The seven-year veteran turned down a six-year, $144-million extension from the Tigers during spring training last season.

The market for Scherzer has been slow to materialize this winter, but promises to intensify after the Chicago Cubs inked Jon Lester to a franchise-record $155-million contract.

While no team has publicly thrown its hat in the mix for Scherzer, it's believed the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are among the clubs considering making a play on the 2013 Cy Young winner.

Scherzer's agent Scott Boras told reporters Wednesday that the Tigers will not get a chance to match an offer should a suitor emerge.

"If we get in a room and we carry out a negotiation and he's pleased with it, it can be done without notice at any time," Boras said."

Scherzer pitched to career highs in innings and strikeouts last year for the Tigers, who acquired him from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-team trade following the 2009 season. He's thrown at least 187 innings in five straight years and only made fewer than 30 starts in his rookie season.
