Report: Red Sox owner takes trip to personally visit Jon Lester

Bob Stanton / USA TODAY Sports

Boston Red Sox owner John Henry knows a thing or two about acquiring valuable assets.

The principal owner of the Boston Globe, Liverpool FC and the Red Sox, Henry reportedly took it upon himself to do his part in trying to recruit left-hander Jon Lester back to Boston.

Henry flew to the Atlanta area, where Lester resides, to personally visit with the free-agent pitcher on Friday, according to Rob Bradford and Alex Speier of WEEI

The visit marks the second time that Henry has met with Lester during the negotiation process, though it's the first time Henry met with him without other members of ownership.

The Red Sox have no shortage of competition for Lester as the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers also appear ready to pony up in excess of $130 million for the 30-year-old's services.

A three-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner with the Red Sox, Lester posted arguably the best season of his nine-year career in 2014. In 32 starts, he went 16-11 with a 2.46 ERA and 220 strikeouts in 219 2/3 innings.
