If Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro does move closer Jonathan Papelbon, his options could be limited.
Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly is reporting that if Papelbon is to move on, he wants to remain as a closer and could block a trade to a team that doesn't see him as one.
Papelbon is on record as saying he’s ready to go to a contending team and his 17-team no-trade clause will not be an impediment. Papelbon did offer one caveat on Saturday: If he can control it, he won’t go to a team that doesn’t plan to use him as a closer.
One previous suitor for Papelbon's services, the Los Angeles Angels, acquired closer Huston Street from the San Diego Padres on Friday.
Salisbury notes that the Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, and Baltimore Orioles could still be in the market for a closer.
