Report: Astros renew Correa's contract at league minimum

Carlos Correa will earn the absolute least a major-league player can be paid next season.

The Houston Astros renewed their star shortstop's contract for 2017 at the league minimum rate of $535,000, sources told FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman.

Despite slashing .274/.361/.451 as a 21-year-old last season, adding 20 home runs and 96 RBIs, the Astros have the right to offer Correa, the 2015 Rookie of the Year, any contract worth at least the league minimum, though they don't necessarily have to.

New York Mets fireballer Noah Syndergaard, for example, also had his contract renewed Friday for a paltry $605,500.

Correa is under team control through the 2021 season, though he will be eligible for arbitration for the first time in 2019.
