Report: Marlins in serious pursuit of Chapman, Jansen, Melancon

Caylor Arnold / USA TODAY Sports

One club quietly looking to make a splash in the free-agent market appears to be the Miami Marlins, and could end up snatching one of the big-three closers away from rival big-market teams.

The Marlins are actively pursuing Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen, and could be a mystery team talking to Mark Melancon as well, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Jansen to Miami would reunite the closer with Marlins manager Don Mattingly, who he previously played under for five years when Mattingly coached the Los Angeles Dodgers. It led to speculation the team is considering a trade involving current closer A.J. Ramos to reshape the bullpen and pave way for Jansen.

It now appears the Marlins are also in on Melancon, who has generated the most interest from the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals, but remains firmly on the Marlins' radar, Heyman notes.

Of the big-three, Melancon is expected to be the cheapest and could land a three- or four-year contract worth approximately $60 million, which would break the record for the most money handed out to a reliever since Jonathan Papelbon's $50-million deal in 2012.
