8 compensation picks added to 1st round of 2017 MLB Draft

The landscape of the 2017 MLB draft was changed on Monday after eight of the 10 impending free agents that were issued a one-year, $17.2-million qualifying offer opted to reject it.

While those free agents are still capable of re-signing with their old team, should any of the eight players sign elsewhere, the new team acquiring their services will be forced to surrender their first-round pick as compensation. However, teams with a top-10 pick will forfeit their next-highest selection, while compensation picks are made in reverse order of the former teams winning percentage.

Philadelphia Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson and New York Mets second baseman Neil Walker accepted the qualifying offer ahead of the deadline, leaving the Toronto Blue Jays (2), Los Angeles Dodgers (2), Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, and Texas Rangers as teams who can look to gain compensatory picks.
