Report: Porter among candidates for Rockies' manager gig

Bo Porter, the former Houston Astros skipper who spent the last two years with the Atlanta Braves, is reportedly among those being considered for the Colorado Rockies' vacant managerial job, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding.

The Rockies have kept their list of potential replacements for Walt Weiss closely guarded, but the club is said to be looking at candidates who are both adept at fostering team chemistry in a variety of ways, and inclined to apply statistics and other data into their work, sources told Harding. Previous managerial experience at the major-league level is a plus, general manager Jeff Bridich said, but not a mandatory prerequisite.

Named special assistant to Braves general manager John Coppolella earlier this week after Brian Snitker was hired as full-time manager, Porter spent the last two years at Atlanta's third base coach. Before that, Porter spent two trying seasons as manager of the Astros, in the midst of a rebuild, guiding them to a 110-10- record (.367) from 2013 through 2014.

Weiss, meanwhile - who compiled a 283-365 record (.437) in his four years as Colorado's manager - stepped down immediately following the 2016 season, citing an unhealthy relationship with the front office.

"It was time to move on," Weiss told Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. "I just thought the working relationship with the front office wasn’t healthy or productive. That was ultimately my thought when I made this decision."
