Farrell: Replay system shouldn't be priority over player safety

John Farrell doesn't think the replay system should overrule a common-sense play.

If a player is called safe as he slides into a base, but called out after video review because his momentum picked him up off the ground, the Boston Red Sox manager thinks the initial call should stand.

"I think everyone at field level would be open to, the call stands based on the initial timing of the play," Farrell told MLB Network Radio Thursday. "If there's a continuation where your body is hovering above the bag but not in complete contact, I think we'd all be willing to say 'you know what, that should be considered safe.'"

Some rules, such as the "Utley Rule" at second and blocking home plate, were implemented in order to ensure player safety.

The issue with players being called out on a play of the nature Farrell is talking about is that some players might get hurt trying to stay on the base, instead of letting their momentum take them where it may.

"If everything is designed for safety of the player, if we're talking about having players steadfast hit the bag and stop and stay the course right there, potentially, we're opening up the box for additional injuries.

"So I'd be in favor of an adjustment to the current rule as it stands."
